Hand Building
Tuesdays 9am - 12pm, 6 weeks session
Spring/Summer semester (March, May, July)
Fall/Winter semester (Sept, Nov, Jan)
This is an all-level hand building class focusing on functional forms and craftsmanship. Fundamentals of pinch, coil and slab forming methods will be presented. Beginners are encouraged to practice all forming methods by creating simple forms. Experienced hand builders may practice creating advanced forms using forming method(s) of choice. Class may also explore form manipulation techniques and pattern development for slab forming method. Project suggestions will be presented. Independent projects ideas and sculpturally inspired functional forms are also encouraged.

1. *Fettling knife (cutting slab)
2. **Metal rib (compressing)
3. *Metal rib with teeth (scoring)
4. Metal scoring brush (scoring limited access area)
5. *Red plastic rib (smoothing)
6. Wooden rib (compressing,scraping,moving clay)
7. ****X-Acto knife(darting)
8. **Wooden Paddle(compressing join, finalizing form)
9. *Shami Cloth/Chamois leather(smoothing rim)
10. **Paint brush(applying slip)
11. Ruler(cutting straight line)
12. Thin plastic(wrap work for slow equalizing drying)
13. Vinegar(slab joining)
14. ***Rasp/Stanley surform cast iron(shave off clay)
15. Loop tools (trimming)
16. Wooden pottery’s knife (for edging and blending)
